Chef-turned-Via-software-engineer teaches Via team to make paella

Study Abroad Day t-shirts, available for purchase!

Via began celebrating International Study Abroad Day weeks ago by helping the founders of this important grassroots movement revamp their website. The website overhaul included adding in the ability for people to buy Study Abroad Day T-shirts created by the Iowa-based RAYGUN.

Ann Oleson, Via’s CEO, made sure everyone on the Via team had their shirts in time for Study Abroad Day, Monday, February 28th.

Oleson says when she learned about Study Abroad Day, she knew Via had to do all it could to support the movement. After talking with Study Abroad Day founders Erin Kunert and Jessica Mulvihill, Oleson knew she wanted to partner with the organization.

“Via is on a mission to power global experiences to change the world,” Oleson says. “Study Abroad Day is all about the celebration of international experiences, other cultures and connectedness.”

Via Software Engineer to Lead Cooking Class

Alexander Mathieu, aka “Chef,” Via’s backend software engineer.

The Via team, which spans the United States, will be sporting their Study Abroad Day T-shirts all day long. The team will cap off the day by making Spanish paella during a virtual cooking class with Alex Mathieu, Via’s backend software engineer, a former chef. “Chef,” as the Via team calls him, will teach the class from his home in Denver, Colorado.

“We chose the region of Spain to focus on because it’s one of the top destinations for study abroad for our partner institutions,” Oleson says. “Several of our team members have also visited Spain and specifically mentioned the amazing cuisine. We chose paella because of the origin of the dish and its many different interpretations.”

“It’s a very flexible dish,” he says of paella.

While he admits to some pre-presentation jitters, Chef is looking forward to the event.

“I’m excited to celebrate Study Abroad Day,” he says. “I feel like food is a great reason to get together. When you can come together to create food, that’s even better.”

Study Abroad Day kicks off another important event: Global Learning Fest, which runs through March 4th. The virtual event was created by another Via partner, the Study Abroad Association. The Global Learning Fest is free and open to colleges and universities across the world.

“SAA and Via are both committed to the international education community and access for every student and every traveler,” says Via’s Oleson. “The Global Learning Fest will be a fun and interactive way for all of us to come together from across the world to celebrate international education.”
